Description: , In August of 1974 the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System opened the doors of one of its most unique, and now treasured facilities, Oatland Island Education (Wildlife) Center. Then director, Mr. Tony Copes, had facilitated the acquisition of the Federally surplussed property with a proposal to utilize it for vocational education. The Center would serve primarily the high school and young adult youth at risk, helping them obtain skills needed to enter the work force. Vocations such as carpentry, plumbing and TV and radio broadcasting helped these young folks become productive citizens of the Savannah area, and at the same time gradually created what is now known as Oatland Island Wildlife Center. The Youth Conservation Corp (YCC) played a large part in creating the “Heritage Home Site” which is now the focal point for several events and school programs. Over the course of the last 40 years Oatland Island has changed its focus to primarily Environmental and Science Education and serves 20,000 school students per year. The Center is now open to the public seven days per week, instead of one Saturday per month as in years past, and it has become a tourist destination for this beautiful city. On August 30 - 31, 2014 Oatland Island Wildlife Center will be celebrating its 40th Anniversary. On Saturday evening, August 30th the special Oatland Anniversary Celebration is an adult only, event that will feature live music, food and beverage and a silent auction. Tickets are $35 per person. Then on Sunday, August 31st from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. join us for our Birthday Party with 40% off admission and Birthday Cake! There will also be scheduled Animal Encounter and Digitarium Planetarium programs and a History Scavenger Hunt. As part of the celebration the staff at Oatland would like to invite all past students, staff, and volunteers to share their experience and memories of Oatland. Send your photos and stories to
