Description: Armstrong Atlantic State University’s College of Education announces an on-campus event specifically devoted to children whose parents are based at Ft. Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield: the Military Parent and Children’s Activity Day. The family event is part of a larger initiative at Armstrong called Educators and Athletes Supporting Youth (EASY), organized by the College of Education, along with Armstrong Athletics and the Office of Veterans Affairs. Through the Military Parent and Children’s Activity Day, the university hopes to strengthen its connection to military families and raise awareness of their unique needs both in and out of the classroom. The Military Parent and Children’s Activity Day will be held on Saturday, April 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Armstrong Sports Center on 11935 Abercorn St. The event is targeted for third through fifth graders and is free and open to the public. Nearly 80 percent of military children attend public schools and face a variety of challenges that can interfere with their learning. The stress of separation from deployments, high mobility rates and frequent school changes can cause academic and social problems, as well as an elevated risk of depression and anxiety. Recognizing the specific needs for military-connected students, Armstrong’s College of Education joined the nationwide program Operation Educate the Educators. The result is the EASY initiative. The goal of EASY is to develop education curricula that foster awareness and understanding of what military children experience. Through EASY, Armstrong’s College of Education hopes to establish a series of resources for parents and children and “family as faculty” opportunities to invite military parents on campus to share their experiences with education majors and faculty. The Military Parent and Children’s Day will feature a variety of fun educational activities, including magic with Magic Marc, storytelling, interactive technology and fitness fun with Armstrong student-athletes. Lunch is also included. To register, parents should contact June Erskine at june.erskine@armstrong.edu or call 912.344.3361. For additional information, contact Brenda Logan at 912.344.3187. Registration deadline is April 1. All children must be accompanied by an adult.
