Description: Darien Lions Club Hosting Annual Fall Fest Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012 Historic Downtown Darien Celebrates the Season with Fall Festival Celebrate the beauty of fall in a southern river-front town by attending the Darien Fall Fest on Saturday, Nov. 3, from 10 am to 6 pm. Fall Fest is an annual event sponsored by the Darien Lions Club and the Darien Better Home Town Board of Directors, but managed by a group of very involved citizens of McIntosh County. Activities simultaneously occur in historic downtown Darien, at nearby Ashantilly Center, Vernon Square and at Fort King George Historic Site. Food and fun abound at this seasonal-themed event which highlights coastal Georgia’s Scottish heritage, the talents of local entertainers and artisans, the maritime legacy, and an abundant amount of family-friendly activities. Browse Darien’s Broad and First Streets for arts and crafts, a juried art show and antiques. Savor the delicious cuisine and mouthwatering desserts in the food court at the corner of Broad Street and Walton Avenue (Highway 17). View over 200 classic cars parked on Vernon Square, just steps from the Darien Waterfront Park. Bring your lawn chair or dancing shoes and keep beat with the Army 3rd Infantry Division Country and Rock Band at their performance among the classic cars at 1 pm. Later in the day enjoy performances on the Broad Street Open Air Stage by the soulful jazz of Michael Hulett’s saxophone at 2 pm followed by the Celtic rock band, Uncle Hamish and the Hooligans at 4 pm. The festival opening ceremony is quickly followed by the Doggy Day Parade sponsored by HART. Local pooches will strut their stuff at 10 am competing for the Best Dressed, Most Obedient, Best Looking and Best Performance/Trick. Wander around town viewing the fall decors and work up an appetite for some of the seafood offerings or desserts baked by local church ladies. History buffs can visit Ashantilly Center (located off Highway 99 just north of downtown Darien) at 1 pm, followed by a walking tour of St. Andrews Cemetery at 1:30, led by Buddy Sullivan, local historian. Fort King George Historic Site will be open at 10 am until 5 pm with living history presentations and audience participation activities. Hopeful chefs can vie for the bragging rights for the best seafood recipe at the YMCA Seafood Cook-off at 11:30 am. Come out for a taste of heaven or better yet, enter your own special dish. Proceeds from the tastings benefit the McIntosh County YMCA, with winners announced at 2:30 pm. Bring your family and maybe your dog. Tell your friends and neighbors. There’s something for everyone at the Darien Fall Fest.
