My favorite squirrel, Freddie, came to visit me yesterday for his daily peanut treats when I noticed a hole, circular wound covering about 3 inches in his left shoulder. The hair was completely gone and the wound looked infected and ragingly out of control with pain. At first I thought his girlfriend Suzy nipped him in play just a smidge too hard during a mating chase. His personality was charming as ever as he peeked through my window to see if I was available to say hello. Just as I was about to open my door and greet my little buddy, my next door neighbors opened their door and he was off in a dash of fright. This was unusual behavior for Freddie who was never afraid of humans before. All he knew is the treats and kindness I had shown him. I was perplexed…
Later that evening, I heard the squirrels playing in the trees, happily chirping away when again the neighbor’s door opened. This time I noticed popping sounds and went to investigate. Sure enough the culprit was a pellet gun aimed right at Freddie and his mate. The shooter obviously apathetic to Freddie’s plight took great delight firing his new toy again and again. I could not understand why this would give such pleasure to injure a harmless animal just trying to survive in this world…same as you or I. Gladly he missed this time but nonetheless the firing went on for some time. I suppose the shooter was a hunter missing the thrill of the kill so poor Freddie was just target practice. Whatever happened to bull’s eye targets hanging 100 yards away to perfect one’s aim? Boring I am sure… a moving target as fast as Freddie must be more of a challenge. Boredom shot Freddie and soon his mate will be next.
I understand why the male specie enjoys hunting…. It’s primal. But when did hunting go from providing food on the table to just sheer fun with the thrills of the chase and the satisfaction of the kill? I will never understand the male species’ mind. I never hope to understand why they enjoy shooting defenseless animals as a past time…when there are other ways to occupy their time. But if someone shoots poor Freddie once again…the culprit is sure to be perplexed this time by this female species’ outrage. After all, Freddie can only chirp in dialogue… someone has to speak for him. I have no problem understanding Freddie’s chirps… He wants everyone to know that he is just trying to survive and provide for his family as well.

The male species is not for you to understand.

All kidding aside, there is such a thing as personal responsibility, whether it is with firearms or anything else a person chooses to do.

MsGenuine commented on Saturday, Sep 13, 2008 at 12:54 PM

You know I am a huge fan of personal responsibility, Sam...we have had many dialogues on this subject... but who is that responsibility delegated to when on can not be accountable for reasons beyond their control? Is Freddy at fault for being at the wrong place at the wrong time...in his home or does Freddy need to grab Suzy by the tail and quickly scat to learn how to avoid the male species entirely like those wolverines who are so elusive ... to survive in this world now? By the way this piece is not an allegory unless you choose to view it in that perspective or is it? Freddy is real and so is Suzy ( they exists in my world atleast for now.) Thanks, Sam for the comment..I knew you would have something to say. BTW neither is the female specie understandable either. LOL

No doubt on the last comment. Obviously it is not Freddy's fault. As for the person with the pellet gun, he has to realize that there are consequences for one's actions. Knowing right from wrong is the issue. We could get into Natural Law but that can wait for another thread.

MsGenuine commented on Saturday, Sep 13, 2008 at 14:53 PM

He cares not about what is "right or wrong" He just does! So I can not help but think that the "natursl law" is the answer. Some people just don't care ... they are selfish and disrespectful for other's rights whatever the life form they exist in but just care about their own wants... even if it impinges on the rights of others...?? Shall we lock up the shooters for wounding Freddie and his buds? I can't help the fact that he likes doing what he does... and mind your own business is his attitude!!! I don't want to impinge on his rights either. Where is the middle ground??

Samuel Adams commented on Saturday, Sep 13, 2008 at 15:03 PM

He has already violated the rights of others. Take his pellet gun and shove it where the sun doesn't shine. Hunting for food is one thing as is chasing away a pesky animal. This is something else.

Step up for your Freddie, video tape the idiot. It is your neighborhood, it is your business. Cruelty is cruelty, find out if the Department of Natural Resources can ticket the idiot. If your truly concerned, put a stop to it. Don't just talk the talk, walk the walk and you too may be your neighbors next target by doing something decent, I should know I live amongest a neighborhood full of idiots.

Thank you for the advice, I will report the incident to the proper authorities... even if I will become the next target because of the repercussions of my report. At the time of the incident I was too emotional to think clearly to see a solution...which is what you helped me with "WhatsHotLips" and I am grateful. I didn't know that one could take a pellet gun away... I thought they had a right to shoot it at whatever they choose especially in Georgia where hunting is a right of passage.

WhatsHotLips commented on Saturday, Sep 13, 2008 at 23:16 PM

I don't understand people's hatred, but they sure have taken it to the extreme with the idea they can do as they please. People take everything for granted, and think it to be their right. I have noticed video taping seems to put their actions in check, or it may be because I take it a step further and prosecute. I'm tired of watching people with the attitude, they have the "right" to do anything...IDIOTS! The reason they act that way is because no one stands against them. I'm not refering to you, I am talking about in general, and our legal system has gotten so corrupt they just buy it off.

Samuel Adams commented on Sunday, Sep 14, 2008 at 04:44 AM

If repercussions are attempted, you certainly have the right to self-defense.

WhatsHotLips commented on Sunday, Sep 14, 2008 at 20:16 PM

Absolutely Mr. Adams, most people don't realize that includes self defense against a juvenile. The problem is they usually sneak around in the dark to do their cowardly dirty. I have put in IR (infared) cameras so now I will have the opportunity of self defense when I catch them sneaking around in the dark doing their cowardly deeds.

MsGenuine commented on Sunday, Sep 14, 2008 at 21:26 PM

I certainly believe in my inherent rights as a human being. But my rights stop where another's begin!! You don't have the right to violate another's right. Most people don't get that concept. As for an update on Freddie.. he was hiding under the cars in the parking lot as the trees he lives in is a very dangerous place to be nowadays. He knows where food and shelter are but now he is so smart that he chooses to hide under a car to protect himself. I looked at the wound and it is healing nicely. The jerk who shot Freddie was out looking at other trees since he couldn't find my Freddie to shoot at anymore! He will be reported first thing on monday as he was at it again on Sunday. This time i got a good look at the pellet gun and saw him in action. I wonder if he knew how much he is an idiot since my Freddie, the squirrel outsmarted the shooter! Don't underestimate an animal's survival instinct. First time though i have seen a squirrel hide underneath a car...that is cat behavior. But the shooter... that is complete idiocy! One can not reason with that specie

Samuel Adams commented on Monday, Sep 15, 2008 at 15:12 PM

Ms HotLips, IR cameras are OK but if you are interested, come to one of our pistol matches at Mission Essential, the next of which is a slow fire match on 23 September. I post all of our matches on the Courier calendar.

Mr. Adams,
I confronted the shooter this morning as today he nearly took my head of with a richochet shot. He is no longer shooting in the neighborhood. I think that people who own these "toys" should have a permit to own as well. I nearly got hit myself this morning. They are just as dangerous as "real" firearms.

WhatsHotLips commented on Monday, Sep 15, 2008 at 22:30 PM

Mr. "A" thanks for the invite, I may show up sometime. I must warn you though I am a very good shot.....

Ms "G" I am proud of you for standing up for the little critters. Sorry you had to step in harms way, sometimes that is what it takes to make a point. Anyone can be injured by those "toys", I agree with the permit idea. Permit or not though the IDIOTS will still cause problems. Hope Freddie recovers, he and Suzy appreciate your effort. Maybe soon they will return back to the trees to live in peace as it should be.

Samuel Adams commented on Tuesday, Sep 16, 2008 at 03:41 AM

Permit Shmermit. The 2nd Amendment clearly states "shall not be infringed". You can appreciate that, right? It issue is with personal responsibility. Let's leave government out of it. If the knucklehead with the pellet gun needs his butt beat, so be it.

MsGenuine commented on Tuesday, Sep 16, 2008 at 17:56 PM

No permits at all? Times have changed since the colonial days. That's why our forefathers' gave us the ability to amend Constitution... for idiots like this shooter. They briliantly had the foresight to anticipate changes would necessary.. such as requiring permits!
