Volunteer firefighters are some of the most courageous and dedicated people I have ever met. At the ringing of an alarm bell, they drop whatever they are doing and respond to the needs of the citizens of our community. For years now, I have watched the fire chiefs of Walthourville, Midway, and Riceboro approach mayors and city councilmen for funding. Whatever actions that need to be taken to improve fire service in Liberty County should not be delayed.
I support the volunteer firefighters. Smoke was gushing out of the front door of my mother's house when three firefighters picked up their hoses and walked into an 1800 degree inferno to save my mother's property. Unfortunately, sometimes Murphy law that anything that can go wrong will go wrong. It is time for the county and city administrators to be more attentive to the needs of our courageous volunteers. Firefighters grieve for the loss of life because they have worked hard and trained and dedicated their lives to protect the property and people of Liberty County, Ga. Now is not the time for criticism but solutions. It is my sincere hope that the county will come up with a countywide fire plan and as one of the highest taxed counties in the state of Georgia maybe it is time we pay our local firefighters.
