I hope we are a little more aggressive than this. Listed below is a summary of some of the new grading guidelines for the Dallas Independant School District:

•Homework grades should be given only when the grades will "raise a student's average, not lower it."

•Teachers must accept overdue assignments, and their principal will decide whether students are to be penalized for missing deadlines.

•Students who flunk tests can retake the exam and keep the higher grade.

•Teachers cannot give a zero on an assignment unless they call parents and make "efforts to assist students in completing the work."

•High school teachers who fail more than 20 percent of their students will need to develop a professional improvement plan and will be monitored by their principals. For middle school the rate is 15 percent; for elementary it's 10 percent.

Absolutely Ridiculous! What we are teaching students besides academia is a "work ethic!" What these new "rules" basically does is excuse the student from personal responsibility. What next... we, as a society, have to make the best effort to have workers actually show up and do their job? These students who are afforded these special priviledges will expect them once they have graduated! What a rude awakening they will receive once the ceremony and speeches are over. If they even attend?? If these students get pampered to this degree they will never be able to go onto college and be successful so why bother even graduating high school? Now a days a high school diploma without further education whether it be a tech school, community college, or university will create a new level of security in poverty. Dallas should be ashamed of lowering expectations in education and catering to underachievers!! Education is and always will be a preparatory experience for Life... Dallas should get a clue!

I agree with MsGenuine, here. The systematic lowering of expectations will lead to absolute chaos in future employment. Employers can not and will not accept this type of a "spoon feeding" mentality. They are simply in business to make a profit not to coddle their workforce.

Parents in Dallas should be circling the Board of Education Headquarters demanding the wholesale resignation of the board. There needs to be a return to the solid core of education of the past. However, Americans simply do not want to pay the higher upfront costs to see that through. Yet, they are forced to pay the longer term, even higher costs in terms of humanity and humility, for the lack of a stronger education. They will be compelled to pay ever increasing fees for the prosecution and incarceration of ill prepared youth, who unable to find employment will turn to drugs and crime.

This is simply another example of the ills we have been discussing here the last few days.
