As Col. Terry Ferrell moves into the Marne Division chief of staff's office, he can take with him at least one not-so-ordinary souvenir of his old job commanding the Second Brigade "Send Me" Combat Team in Iraq: the Legion of Merit.
The Legion of Merit was created by Congress during World War II and is the sixth-ranking U.S. decoration. It recognizes exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services and achievements.
The Legion is awarded to foreign civilian and military leaders as well as the U.S. military. Ferrell thus joins Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Chek of Nationalist China and Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia as a holder of the LOM.
