My son Richard and I drove a U-Haul truck from New York City to Liberty County last week. It was a long, expensive trip.
Most places the price of gasoline was still under $4 a gallon, though in New York the price was nearing $4.50 at several stations.
A good thing from that high price, though, was the number of cars on the road. I assume that is what cut the number of cars and thus traffic jams.
There was not a traffic jam anywhere between NY and Richmond. We had a couple slow-downs farther south, one in Virginia and the other in North Carolina. One was when a lane was closed for painting and other was from drivers slowing to rubberneck at a wreck in the north-bound lanes.
I’ve not driven a lot in the New York area, but every time I have there usually were several bumper-to-bumper jams. Last August, the backup was all the way from NY to south of Washington.
Not this time, though. We breezed through the area, if you can call driving in a U-Haul breezing.
