Libertarian presidential nominee Bob Barr wants to join in on the planned "Lincoln-Douglas debates" between Republican nominee John McCain and his Democratic rival Barack Obama.
McCain and Obama recently agreed to appear at town hall meetings across the country heading into the November election and Barr's campaign thinks he should be part of the action.
In a statement released late last week, the campaign said because Barr "has a mathematical chance of being elected" the former Georgia Republican congressman should be invited to participate in the debates.
Barr said he "would be pleased to begin at New York's Federal Hall next week, as Sen. McCain suggested or at a later time, if preferred by Sen. Obama."
Neither the McCain nor the Obama camp have commented on whether or not they would be open to including Barr in the debates.
Although the Republican-turned-Libertarian does not have a lot of national name recognition, some pundits believe Barr has just enough visibility to pull votes from McCain, which has led some analysts to theorize Barr could be to Obama what Ross Perot was to former President Bill Clinton.
