It has been to my shock there are a lot of people, youth and adult, that do not know how to properly inquire and apply for a job. In the fifteen years I have been in management I have had the sad dismay of sorting through applications that have not been filled out correctly.
Here are some tips for all of our new graduates and adults looking for employment, whether it be at a fast food place, Wal-mart or an office, these tips are important to your future employer.

1. The first thing you want to do is look in the help wanted adds or your local Department of Labor office.

2. Once you have your list of places you need to go there in person and ask for an application. When you do this please don't send a friend or relative to pick it up and don't come in attire that says I really don't care whether I get this job or not. Do not bring a friend with you.

3. Ask what position(s) they are hiring for and apply only for that position. applying for anything other than what the employer is looking for will not get you the job.

4. Fill the applications out completely. Most applications ask standard questions like name, address, birth date, and social security number. They also ask for prior job experience and education. If you leave anything blank you should explain why when you turn you application in.

5. Don't come in at times that the employer can not talk to you. If it is a restaurant, you should go in after lunch but before dinner. Ask what would be the best time to come back.

6. Once you have received the application and filled it out properly. Once you have returned it to the employer, you should inquire when they might call you and keep checking back to see if they have made a decision.

7. Lastly, if you are called back for an interview don't take your kids, family, friends and come in showing you are willing to work. after all, you are selling a product (yourself)and if you want the employer to buy it you have to be willing to show them how their company couldn't survive without it, The product you are selling is you. And don't forget dress neatly not in street clothes or sweats.

If you follow these simple steps you should have no problem getting a job. It might not be the exact one you want but it will fill the lack of a paycheck till you get the one you want.

but remember this, it doesn't matter how much education you have, if you don't know the basics of applying for a job and dressing correctly, you won't succeed in getting hired.
