It's been part of the political rumor mill for months, but Georgia Sen. Johnny Isakson wont be running for governor in 2010 after all.
The junior senator met with his staff Thursday to announce he's decided to seek another term in the U.S. Senate rather than run for governor.
Isakson’s deputy chief of staff Joan Kirchner said part of the senator’s reason for opting out of a gubernatorial run was because he enjoys his work in the Senate and believes the chamber will be instrumental in shaping the country under the next president.
"Johnny loves serving in the U.S. Senate, and he thinks this presidential election – no matter who wins – will be one of the most important in the country's history," Kirchner said. "And in the next administration, the U.S. Senate will be where all the action is."
Frustrated by the two most recent sessions of the General Assembly, which dissolved into squabbling among the House speaker, lieutenant governor and governor, Georgia’s business community had been rallying for Isakson to return to state politics.
But some close to the senator said the very nature of the infighting was a discouragement for him.
