I have had the misfortune of visiting the Live Oak Public Library recently to be surrounded by unsupervised young children running wild down the aisles, teens socializing in the section reserved for reading magazines and newspapers, argumentative and disruptive adolescents making scenes in the computer sections and with librarian attendents on duty. On my last visit, a young female teen had a loud argument with the librarian and was subsequently asked to leave the facility. The teen in a furious response ripped up several pieces of paper, made a scene, threw the papers up in the air to create a mess for someone else to clean up and then proclaimed loudly she would be contacting her parent about this matter immediately in a righteous indignant posture. When did the public library become a drop-off babysitting service? When did the library become a social hall for bored teens to disrupt those who have come to read and study? The level of noise is so disruptive, I can't imagine the atmosphere can be considered conducive to reading, studying, or learning. When I was introduced to the library as an elementary student, the "SHHH!" system was strictly enforced, meaning NO TALKING... PERIOD. It was blasphemous to even disturb with any form of noise, creating a disturbance for any patron in the facility! No More! Now anything goes, sometimes like a wild preschool circus! Disrespect has now become the norm! If teens need a social hall to socialize, please build them one so that those who wish for some silence in the library can be afforded the priviledge to concentrate!
