Uniform reaction

The Liberty County School Board’s decision to require high school students to wear uniforms took me by surprise. I heard back when members voted to put uniforms in elementary and middle schools last year that they would consider high schools later, but I didn’t know it was coming up when it was approved Tuesday. Another surprise was my son Joe’s reaction. He’s pretty much for it. He says it will make the decision what to wear easier. He often dresses preppy, so khaki pants and pullover shirts are already in his wardrobe. As a teen my reaction to being told what to wear would have been completely different. My wardrobe was blue jeans and pocket T-shirts. If the Cherokee County, KS, school board had voted to require me to wear blue jeans and T-shirts, I would have argued that I wanted to wear slacks and sports shirts. It wasn’t that I cared that much about what I wore, but I hated being told what to do. So today I don’t see how uniforms are going to improve our high schools. I fear students may just become more resentful. But then I don’t have to deal with all the variables that gather in those institutions every day. What about you? Do you think uniforms are going to help our students and the schools?

I think clothing addresses social status, personality, culture, wealth. While these can be good or bad, the concern in the schools should be education, where most clothing puts the focus on image...which is something I think we need to step away from.

Yes, I think uniforms will help our students and schools. It would be even better if the schools enforce the dress codes that already on the books in conjunction with the uniforms. Having uniforms take away the distraction of new fad outfits, peer pressure and the abuse to some kids for not being able to keep up with latest style. To quote an old 80's rap song, "you go to school to learn not for a fashion show!"

Amazing! Where are the American Freedoms we tout everyday? Now teens have been stripped of their choice to decide what to wear to express their unique individuality, a trait highly prized in our society? How do you think this will affect the clothing retail industry? Personally, as a former educator in primary and secondary education, I do believe that a student's education is not affected by the outer garmets they carry around everyday, but the motivation to learn which is carried on their shoulders! No matter what the students put on in the morning, if they want to go to school and be productive students, with an innate motivation to learn, coupled with the proper resources to meet their needs they will be successful in life. Using uniforms to fix a broken education system or shroud poor parenting will do nothing to solve problems but create more burdensome costs to parents or taxpayers more money for those who simply cannot afford the new conformity dress code!

Yes I think a school uniforms will help kids to not be so distracted. I have a young son in one of the Liberty County middle schools. Before uniforms came along, I was shocked to see what young girls get away with wearing. The clothing they wore would distract any healthy male, including male teachers. If schools can't make them follow the old dress codes, maybe uniforms will help. Then teachers can spend more time focusing on teaching and not what each kid is wearing. I also worked in school for a short time and saw the difference in how affluent kids got treated better than the nonaffluent kids. If a uniform will help Teachers not to discriminate between the "classes" then that will surely improve the quality of our schools. My children didn't like wearing uniforms at first but they adusted very quickly.
I for one a happy to see uniforms in the schools. I just hope that retail stores pay attention to the new code. Last summer was a fiasco trying to find uniforms. Thank goodness for Pro-Feet. Bensonville, Arkansas would be very not be very happy to hear how much revenue they lost last fall due to the unprepardness of their buying agent.
