On Monday, Sept. 17, we will celebrate the 220th anniversary of our U.S. Constitution. This is the document which created our Republican form of government and guarantees our rights and liberties as citizens of this great land.
The tradition of celebrating our Constitution was started many years ago by the Daughters of the American Revolution. In 1955, the DAR petitioned Congress to set aside Sept. 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The resolution was adopted by Congress and signed into public law on Aug. 2, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
We need to be ever mindful of our responsibility to protect and defend our Constitution, so that generations who follow will be able to enjoy our wonderful heritage.
I am hoping that the Coastal Courier will take a major role in promoting the observance of Constitution Week. You could get the word out and inspire all to get involved. Our citizens should be encouraged to study the Constitution - in its original intent.
