Some animals possess the power to break a heart with a mere look alone. This animal has that power.
The first time I looked at her looking at me, her eyes managed to pull my heart into pieces.
She is a quiet girl who wants so desperately to know something more, but her fears hold her back. She is so frightened and cautious that little doubt remains that she has been terribly misused and treated in cruel ways.
Her steps are soft as she inches closer to the chain link of her pen. Her head is held low and her tail manages only the subtlest of wags. She wants to know a gentle hand, but the scars inside of her seem to warn her to near stillness. She doesn't know how to let herself be loved, yet she seems to ache to be taught. Reaching in to pet her, she allows my touch and I can almost feel her spirit begging my fingertips to stay.
As I walked the outside field, she would follow from within her pen hinting at the type of devotion she would offer in a compassionate home. When I would then pause my other tasks to turn in her direction, I could sense her muscles tense. She would hold still as if waiting to see if I would come to her as a friend or raise my hand to her in abuse. Either way, it seemed she would dutifully accept whatever I delivered with a certain level of detachment. As I assume she would accept the sharp needlepoint of a lethal injection in much the same way.She shouldn't have to have that ending.
The wounded beauty of this creature is devastating in it's loveliness - almost artistic in the way that it captures it's viewer. Such beauty should be allowed to develop and bloom, the emotional wounds should be given the mercy of healing.

Please note: Although they share the same address and similar names, Liberty County Animal Control and Liberty County Humane Shelter are NOT the same thing!
Also, Liberty County Animal Control is not an adoption facility. They are only able to release to licensed rescues. However, no one wants to see an animal die unnecessarily, so if you would like to adopt one of their animals, they are often able to set it up with a rescue. This teamwork spares lives :)
Some breeds are adopted out more cautiously and depending on the rescue the adoption is done through, there may even be a home check to be certain the animal will not be used for breeding (all animals must be spayed or neutered - no exceptions) or the atrocities of fighting.
