Why Jesus Washed his Disciple's Feet (Part V)

John speaks of confessing our sins in verse 9;

Please understand that confession here is not a recounting of individual trespasses but a realization that unless we obtain the righteousness of God by faith in Christ we will be forever lost in our sinful condition. We will be lost because we will remain in that condition.

The confessing of our sin is a state of mind which is in agreement with the mind of God. We must see ourselves as he sees us in order to walk in agreement with him and thus open the door for salvation to come.

John goes on to say that if we recognize our true condition Jesus will cleanse us of unrighteousness. The act of cleansing here is not referring to a one time deal but a continual washing which occurs when we maintain a right attitude about our relationship with God.

We maintain right standing (righteousness) by our realization and confession of the sinful state of the flesh in which we reside, not by believing and depending on the works of our flesh.
