Also keep in mind that the disciples were to be left on earth in order to spread the news of Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection to the entire world. Our Lord knew that his death was imminent and that the disciples were his designated spokesmen in the earth.

Jesus was the embodiment of the actual passover lamb which was sacrificed for the sins of the world. He had the power to forgive sin because he was the only man without a sin nature.

In verse 7 he affirms that Peter doesn’t understand the spiritual significance of washing their feet. The reason that Peter did not understand at that time is because Jesus had not yet been crucified. This mystery could not be revealed to men until after his death and resurrection.

As the Passover Lamb he washed the feet of his disciples because they were to be left on earth to perform the work of spreading the gospel. They would encounter many trials and much temptation while accomplishing their earthly mission (as we do) so he would have to minister to them from time to time (as he also ministers to us).
