Take Me To Post Comment Form

I encourage anyone reading this to go read the Editorial in todays Sept 3rd's Coastal Courier. After reading it please consider supporting the Courier's questioning of the practices being imposed by the LCSS Superintendent Dr. Lee. If you have children, grand children, nieces and or nephews, then a call to action is in order. Letters to the Editor or doing SoundOffs need to take place.

The Superintendent is imposing barriers to Free Speech and access to reporters or for that matter it seems to anyone wishing to talk to a teacher of their child.

Below is the letter I penned this morning and sent to the Courier. Please read the Courier Editorial in todays edition. Then do what you feel is right.

Thank you.

"Good Morning,

It is very apparent that the Courier is performing at the highest professional level in exploring the issues regarding the BOE and the Superintendent as evidenced by your editorial in todays edition.
I can only speak for myself but I am sure there are many others that appreciate your work regarding this matter.

From a personal observance perspective, it is very clear that the LCSS is in the process of attempting to build a wall between them and the public's right to know by setting up obstacles regarding access to what is considered (up to now) public knowledge. A siege mentality seems to be forming within the LCSS and its Superintendent.

I am aware that Dr. Lee was in the 'chain' of command during the time the Clayton County School System lost their accreditation. We can only hope that such does not occur here in Liberty County.

Thank you for your continuing efforts to report facts on this matter. I am confident in your resolve to report the truth and by so doing acting in the best interests of our children and Liberty County."

Keep it up!

Sincerely,

Jimmy Darsey

Very good I am getting on it right now

JimmyMack commented on Wednesday, Sep 03, 2014 at 12:57 PM

Judging by her web page, Dr. Lee was Assistant Superintendent when Clayton County lost its accreditation.

shannalat commented on Wednesday, Sep 03, 2014 at 13:11 PM

I just read the editorial about the cold shoulder from the Board of Education to Liberty County School board....
"The basis of our governments being the opinion of the people, the very first object should be to keep that right; and were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. But I should mean that every man should receive those papers and be capable of reading them." --Thomas Jefferson to Edward Carrington, 1787. ME 6:57

Every parent has the right to know what the school board does why it does it and should have a voice in the decisions. The current superintendent has not been held responsible for any of her actions (many of which seem to be deferential to the children s education and only beneficial to her own needs) I believe you hit the nail on the head earlier when you mentioned Tyrant.
I hope that everyone who reads this blog will flood the School board with e mail.. Let them know that the actions are unacceptable

WOW-so much for transparency.

It's a shame the teachers and staff are afraid to speak out because they could lose their jobs.

The only way to resolve this issue-Recall the Board of Education members and replace them with members that will fight for the students and the County.

I think it's important to note that she was also denied a position in DeKalb County--Few months before applying in Liberty County. It seems that several counties saw the writing on the wall.

Just a suggestion... Start a protest and hope for a large turn out which should bring in more media.

How to Recall School Board Members

Citizens may recall board members or other elected local officials if their leadership has been found lacking. Single members or entire boards can be recalled. If executed with good intent, a recall can be a proactive measure to ensure adequate community leadership in education. While most municipalities have their own code governing the process, much of it is standard.

Who is writing up the petition. I will sign and get more signatures?

OMG! Anyone with a brain should see this for what it is! I fear for the teachers and staff in Liberty County Schools. No one will talk due to flat out intimidation. How horrible is this? How totally unAmerican! Teachers are supposed to encourage our children on how to question, how to research, how to form their own opinion and voice. And yet, they are silenced due to unethical leadership. Don't think this is going unnoticed by our high school students! Liberty County used to have citizens who cared. Have we turned into such a transient community that this type of abuse can be allowed to continue? No wonder Dr. Lee came here and brought her lemmings with her. Liberty County has turned into one huge over priced corrupt place to raise children. Pray for our teachers. Pray for our children.Great work Coastal Courier! You have hit a nerve. Freedom of speech..........last time I checked that was still one of our basic rights. But then, we don't teach history anymore do we? How convenient.

Wow, I usually hold my peace, when things like this are brought out into the open. I get the "feeling" that much more is amiss than the STAR program being cancelled. It just doesn't pass the smell test. Has all the ear marking of misuse or abuse of public trust. A simple request for the minutes of a board meeting that revealed a renegotiated contract for the superintendent has morphed into what appears to be a "circle the wagons" directive and a dictatorship established to thwart, delay, deny or obstruct request for access to public records. I wonder what else is not recorded in the official record of the Liberty County School Board meetings.

Jimmy Thank You for not being afraid of posting your name for the editor. Employees of the school system are afraid to lose their jobs.

golfnut31316 commented on Wednesday, Sep 03, 2014 at 20:30 PM

WOW. How can you give a pay raise that large when you've had an employee turn over of some 15% in one year, graduation rates have not went up, and failure rates have not changed?
When I was employed in the LCSS, we were asked all the time to save, cut spending, we don't have the funds.
The board needs to be recalled, period for voting for all this. The superintendent and all the assistants need to be replaced. The staff at the board office is too large. Most in the big building get paid too much for the little they do.

Sheran commented on Wednesday, Sep 03, 2014 at 20:50 PM

If Liberty county is so corrupt, what good is a petition or a recall on the school board members? A peaceful protest that has large numbers draws attention.

PoliticsNation commented on Wednesday, Sep 03, 2014 at 20:59 PM

A peaceful protest is a good start.

shannalat commented on Thursday, Sep 04, 2014 at 08:00 AM

a protest may be in order when and where?

jmcabee commented on Thursday, Sep 04, 2014 at 10:48 AM

Just as a reminder, all Board of Education meetings are open to the public. The next one is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 9 at 5:30 p.m.

Libertytaxpayer commented on Thursday, Sep 04, 2014 at 13:26 PM

too bad the employees are scared to go!

Libertytaxpayer commented on Thursday, Sep 04, 2014 at 13:28 PM

Not to mention you can not speak unless it was put on the agenda! Go figure...

Libertytaxpayer commented on Thursday, Sep 04, 2014 at 13:38 PM

Did I read correctly that soon Marcus Scott will be joining the mess??????

JimmyMack commented on Thursday, Sep 04, 2014 at 13:52 PM

LTP: Yes. We've blogged much about Mr. Scott's election to the BOE here. I wrote a letter to the Editor about him and his impregnating an underage female student while he was employed by the school system. He was fired. Subsequently he also was let go from Montgomery County when they learned of his actions.

The only thing I know left to do is contact the Savannah networks about Mr. Scott and maybe even the Superintendent controversy.

Scott will be JOINING the actual body of officials that FIRED Him!!!!

Amazing isn't it!!!

shannalat commented on Thursday, Sep 04, 2014 at 16:00 PM

I can't believe Marcus Scott is on the board of education either. He should have been served with a restraining order after his actions as an educator instead he was rewarded and entrusted to lead youth again!!
So Tuesday at 5:30pm, now how can you get put on the agenda?

jmcabee commented on Thursday, Sep 04, 2014 at 16:13 PM

There should be a sign-up sheet that you can sign prior to the start of the meeting. There's an item on the agenda called "Audience Participation." Once they get to that agenda item, anyone who has signed up is allowed three minutes to speak.

Libertytaxpayer commented on Thursday, Sep 04, 2014 at 18:01 PM

I know this, been there before, Number 1 rule you can not talk about personal! If you do they will ask you to step down. It has to be topics in general and suggestions and at any time if they feel it not what they want to hear you are ask to step down. Not my first rodeo with them!

wayne44 commented on Friday, Sep 05, 2014 at 06:23 AM

When has this BOE ever carried about what parents or the community think about the way they run things? The superindentent was overpaid from the beginning and now the BOE has the gall to give her a raise. If they used the money wisely that the taxpayers intrust them with no teacher would be furloughed. They all talk a great deal about how its all about the children but you don't see any improvement in the graduation rates or test scores. Typical bureauacracy, top heavy, overpaid, and incompetent. How many assistant superintendents does the Board now have? Three, four? If Dr. Lee needs that many assistants then what is left for her to do? The biggest problem I see is a community that would vote someone like Marcus Scott on to the BOE with all of his baggage and the BOE hiring someone with a questionable background as the superintendent. It's long past time for the folks in Liberty County to stop voting for the same people in our city and county elected offices to include the BOE. The old regime is not getting the job done.

JimmyMack commented on Friday, Sep 05, 2014 at 06:58 AM

@wayne44: Yes, the Ballot Box is the ANSWER. The problem tho is in getting out the vote to vote out the incumbents. They are very entrenched. THey have a great number of elected officials who have staff, relatives, and influence.

I voted for Jason Floyd, a Conservative Republican in the last City Council Election and I am a Democrat. I even put a his sign in my yard and called people. Well, he got elected, but has yet to display ANY FISCAL conservatism regarding budgets voted on by Council!!

I did the same thing for Billy Kitchings, a hard nosed take no prisoners Conservative. Electing Billy would have shaken the foundation of the power structure. But...low turnout by the populace and a high turnout by the entrenched City Structure by them, their families, and city employees trumped Billy's run for office of Mayor.

Locally, we MUST, if we are going to change things here, is vote out EACH and EVERY INCUMBENT, no matter their political affiliation. Until we start doing that, we can expect to be continually run over.

shannalat commented on Friday, Sep 05, 2014 at 10:20 AM

The ballot box definitely is the answer!!

wayne44 commented on Friday, Sep 05, 2014 at 10:30 AM

Another problem is getting people to vote for the person and not the party affiliation. If that were the case John Henry Rogers would still be the Tax Commissioner. I don't recall the number of idiots who made the comment they couldn't vote for John because he was a Democrat. Who cares about the party affiliation if the person is qualified and can do the job? Small-minded folks, I guess.

golfnut31316 commented on Sunday, Sep 07, 2014 at 18:48 PM

The other problem is getting some one to run against them. During the last few elections most of the school board members ran unopposed.

golfnut31316 commented on Sunday, Sep 07, 2014 at 18:54 PM

BTW, there are 4 assistant superintendents, last year they had 5. I think they call them Chief's or Executives now. I believe they all have an executive secretary. I couldn't even tell you how many Directors they have now, not to mention assistant directors.
