Chatham Co. Cuts Hours for Part-Timers
By JoAnn Merrigan - email
Savannah - About 130 part-time employees of Chatham County will be working fewer hours and we're told the Affordable Care Act is to blame. Seasonal workers at the Aquatic Center and others in the Parks and Recreation Department will have their hours reduced to 30 per week, maybe 25. (many had been working up to 32 hours per week, although we talked to a few who said they sometimes got even more hours.)

Now Chatham County Commissioners say the County would have to provide insurance if the seasonal employees work more than 30 hours. They say new health care law requires that although in the case of many part-timers, they are definitely seasonal. County Chairman Al Scott says that means they work only a certain season of the year. "We are just trying to keep these employees at the same status," he told News 3. "Which is why we are following a staff recommendation to cut hours back.

Scott says in the case of some employees like lifeguards, they will increase pay slightly per hour. But Steve Linvill who works at the Chatham County Aquatic Center says that won't make up for cutting hours.

"I think most people would definitely rather have hours than insurance right now," he told us.

it's going to get worse. the main job growth has been in the hospitality field the last few years. they are expecting to have the greatest cut back in hours when it all hits.

It's already hitting hard! Use to you could go and apply for a job and get it no matter of age, now age makes a big difference due to insurance rates by age...I know several people that lost their job because of their age... None of us are getting younger. Our country is so screwed! Great blog.☺

Ditto. When all the provisions of ObamaCare kick in (as opposed to being kicked down the road), the negative impact will grow exponentially.

I'm not sure that I completely understand it, however it appears to me that it is nothing more than a scam which puts the burden of the cost of a program on the working (as in employed)and delivers the benefits to all (such as unemployed).

Sounds to me to be a lot like what they told us in hi-school that was communism.

FROM EACH ACCORDING TO THEIR ABILITY-TO EACH ACCORDING TO THEIR NEED.

In other words. A paradise for a freeloader.

TOT, were all going to be forced to free load once we reach a certain age! Unless your own your own business... Then you have to pay taxes and insurance witch means a younger person can compete at half the price because they're younger, Insurance rates are cheaper. I don't want to be in this so called "paradise"!
