"I Don't Mind A Parasite. I Object To A Cut-Rate One."
That’s what WE THE PEOPLE need to watch out for when we’re on the receiving end of ANY numbers from the government. This is especially the case in the context of ObamaCare “enrollment” numbers. This topic has been discussed extensively on this here blog site over the past six months, and I (for one) have stressed skepticism when trusting the numbers put out by the Obama administration.
This reason for this skepticism was highlighted last week in an editorial posted at investors.com
titled: “The ObamaCare Numbers Racket.” The editorial explains in detail how the Obama administration plays with the numbers in an attempt to maximize the positive spin on their “signature” health care program and keep the truth under wraps. Here is the editorial in its entirety:
“The ObamaCare Numbers Racket
Health Care: Two more signs that all is not well in ObamaCare land: The administration has pushed back the enrollment deadline while refusing to say how many have actually paid their ObamaCare premiums.
ObamaCare has become like that old quip of Mark Twain's about the weather in New England. If you don't like it, wait a few days and it will change.
Less than two weeks ago, the administration was emphatic that there would be no delay of the March 31 enrollment deadline for ObamaCare. In fact, the spokesman for the agency in charge of ObamaCare said, "We don't actually have the statutory authority to extend the open enrollment period in 2014."
The next day, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius was asked point-blank at a congressional hearing if she was going to delay the deadline. "No, sir," was her response.
The reason ObamaCare imposes a limited open enrollment period in the first place is to prevent people from gaming the system — buying insurance only after they get sick. So extending the deadline would just encourage abuse.
Nevertheless, this week Obama officials suddenly changed their minds. They claim the two-week delay will just provide leeway to those who started the ObamaCare enrollment process but couldn't finish it in time.
Unlikely. The White House has claimed since early December that all the HealthCare.gov glitches were fixed and that it could handle mass volumes.
Plus, anyone who wants to can take advantage of the extension. All a person has to do is check a box saying he or she tried to enroll before the deadline. Federal officials won't try to figure out who is, or isn't, telling the truth.
No, the real reason for the deadline delay is that Obama is desperate to get lagging enrollment numbers as high as he can, any way he can.
It's the same reason the administration refuses to produce data on how many ObamaCare "enrollees" have actually paid their premiums: HHS officials insist they just don't have that information.
But this week Reps. Dave Camp and Kevin Brady discovered that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has been telling insurers to report both enrollment and payment data. That, the lawmakers say, strongly suggests "the administration knows who has enrolled and paid their first month's premium."
In addition, eight state-run exchanges — each built with federal grant money — have managed to produce nonpayment data for some time now.
That picture isn't very pretty. In Maryland, 46% of enrollees haven't paid their premiums so far. In Vermont, 36% are unpaid. Overall, about one in five people in these states has yet to pony up.
If that average holds nationwide, it means that fully 1 million people haven't paid for their ObamaCare plans yet and could lose their coverage.
No wonder Obama wants to keep this number under wraps.
In running for office, he promised change you can believe in. When it comes to ObamaCare, what he's delivering is change whenever it suits him politically.”
The REAL measure of ObamaCare enrollment is determined by one thing: whether an “enrollee” actually pays their premiums. Most important is that those enrollees CONTINUE to make their payments in order to fund the system. Otherwise, WE THE PEOPLE are holding the bag once again as there is a provision built in to the law to bail out the insurance companies if premiums can’t keep the system afloat: Read about how that works here:
ObamaCare “enrollees” are just one area where it has been recently revealed that the Obama administration has being played fast and loose with the numbers to their significant advantage. In an article posted at dailycaller.com
titled: “Report: Obama administration released 68,000 convicted criminal aliens last year,” Caroline May quotes from a report from the Center for Immigration Studies scheduled to be released today:
“Since June 2011, when the first of the Obama administration’s “prosecutorial discretion” policies were put in place....interior ICE arrests have declined by 40 percent.
“The Obama administration and anti-enforcement activist groups have tried to portray the number of departures as ‘record-breaking’ and indicative of robust immigration enforcement. They have tried to support this claim by showing that the number of departures credited to ICE is higher than ever before,” the report reads. “However, an independent analysis of ICE records obtained in a lawsuit showed that ICE was able to achieve these ‘record’ departures only because the agency was taking credit for removing a large number of individuals who were apprehended by the Border Patrol. Such cases made up the majority of ICE’s reported deportations in 2013, but they had never been counted that way in previous administrations.”
Indeed, as the review highlights, many aliens with criminal convictions have simply been released.
In 2013 some 68,000 criminal aliens were released — or 35 percent of all criminal aliens ICE reported encountering, according to the report. ICE field offices with the highest rates of criminal releases were San Antonio (79 percent), New York City (71 percent), Washington, D.C. area (64 percent), and Newark, N.J. (60 percent).
“These figures suggest that despite claims of a focus on public safety, the administration’s prosecutorial discretion criteria are allowing factors such as family relationships, political considerations, or attention from advocacy groups to trump criminal convictions as a factor leading to deportation,” the report reads.

So here again we have the Obama administration trying to take credit for a statistical “achievement” which when further scrutinized, substantially lacks analytical rigor. In the above two cases, we have two excellent examples of what WE THE PEOPLE need to be on the lookout for. The stakes are too high in the upcoming elections for us to simply take the Obama administration at their word. Unfortunately – as we have found out time and time again – what they say is not always the way things really are.
