In the two or three years I've visited this site, this particular blog is the single most important one I've ever seen.
This blog site should have more of this sort of probing commentary.
Tot may be right. However, Ice, THEY do it because they CAN do it. Voter apathy rampant as it is here affords everyone of them impunity from voter rejection. As I have said here before, I, JimmyMack, a Liberal Democrat voted for Billy Kitchens a fiscal Conservative Republican and Jason Floyd, a Conservative, in the last local elections. All to no avail as voter turnout did not reach 20%. The only way to get their attention is thru the ballot box. So far, there ain't enough of us showing up to vote them out. Even tho Jason made it, he voted with the rest of the council to increase taxes.
I am probably going to pull up stakes and head to that condo in Boca Raton for the long goodbye.
I respectfully disagree Jimmy, what we need to do is get them to resign before they do more damage. We can do that if we investigate enough, dig enough, and make enough noise. If they don't leave after you expose them, they will certainly leave when we vote them out. They need to be held culpable for everything they do, its ridiculous when a voter ask to speak to a representative because I have personal grievance I wish to address with my representative, that they act indignant. Or at least they can pretend to read your letter! LOL
ICE, Buddy, I hate to tell you this...but they ain't walking out on their own. If you got the funds and time to dig and then probably hire an attorney, then more power to you. And "make enough noise," brings in the same boogey man of public apathy. There is not that many who seem to care enough about making noise. You cannot shame anyone who has no shame for their actions.
So, I guess I am saying you may have a point of "getting them to resign" but you're swimming up stream against the current.
Jimmy is right on this one; there are plently of people that complain but for some reason can't get off the couch to vote in order to voice their displeasure. Apathy always wins and is normally not for the good.
YEs and they count on us to forget come election time!
Its time we Americans took our country back one vote at a time!
"I am probably going to pull up stakes and head to that condo in Boca Raton for the long goodbye."
Don't do it. We need you here.
I agree with tot also. I'm tired of Liberty County/Hinesville politicians. I'm not from this area but I consider it home now. I've learned that it's not what you know but who you know in this area. If you upset one person in this town they will try and black ball you. I know a young lady that asked too many questions, challenged an appointed official and had to leave town. Tread lightly.
Politics makes for strange bed fellows, does it not? ICE, Me, Tot, HMJC, PN, Sebe. All on the same page??!!!
Tot and I are locals. I think it is correct to say that both of us are very familiar with the power structure here. It is powerful and well entrenched. We once had the local paper, formerly named the Liberty County Herald, owned by the Wynn family, now known as the Coastal Courier. It began a series on local government and asked some tough questions. It was FIRE BOMBED!! Burnt out!! I am not suggesting that the local power structure now is of the mindset as the one's responsible for burning down the Herald. Their power is more insidious and clever. Take a look at some Cell Phone tower real estate purchases for example, and other 'strategic' purchases and see who owns them. Follow the money. But do so, at your own risk. And remember the old saying: you can't fight city hall. Also, know that during the boom years of Hinesville beginning in the early 70's and up to now, there has been ONLY ONE public official to go to prison for their public office improprieties. She was a young Black Female and she got 30 years. Recently paroled, but nevertheless, the only one that has ever been 'punished.'
We, JM wife and dog, on the other hand, are probably headed to Boca or Fernandina. Still looking at HOA fees, property taxes, health issues, etc. We have found some areas that are very property tax friendly. It may be in Hurricane Alley, but you can run from a Hurricane. Here, one is in the deathly bank balance draining, life altering clutches of the TAX MAN.

I think the things we probably agree on far outnumber our differences. The common denominator is that we all CARE. And we're here scuffling about means and methods - rarely about the end results. We all seem to want people to be treated with dignity and respect and to not get screwed by "the system." Our difference are in the variations of how we see the best outcomes.
The official Jimmy cites was essentially convicted of stealing more than a million dollars of taxpayer money by writing herself unauthorized checks. The story is here:
(Here's a related story which I wasn't aware of until I started searching for the above link:
Jimmy - regarding the TAX MAN: I know you're doing your homework but are things that much better in South FL than here? My retirement choices essentially were Chicago, central TX and here, and I picked the one that made the most sense for me. According to Kiplinger, the tax issues in FL and GA seem very similar:
(...and while both GA and FL are in Kiplinger's "Top 10" most retirement friendly states, GA is ranked #3 while FL is ranked #10...)
You might want to consider retiring outside of US too. Nice areas in Mexico, Coasta Rica, many other areas where you can stretch your dollars at least until it collapses!
I just read through more of the budget, its really ticking me off. How is there INSURANCE as much as their payroll? Does that make sence to anyone else?
Now Im not talking about witholdings, Im talking the county paid insurance, we pay with tax dollars!
Icy: I think that anyone who doesn't want to live in this country should go where they think they can get a better deal. However, I'll point out that Lee Harvey Oswald thought that in 1961/1962 when he "relocated " to the Soviet Union and Mexico, and look how that turned out.
I agree but he was a strange bird to begin with, he wanted a communist government. If he had just waited a few years he could have seen our government and he would love now!
I just think our government is no longer working for us, but against us, and they act like they are the Administrators and not us. Wrong view for government officials UNLESS your in a socialist counrty, are we?
