I was freaked about the 'Gov', but I am familiar with some of his good works in office and he has been a good 'Gov' for S.C.
It seems to me that Sanford has a long history of bad behavior--it's just that he recently crossed Senator Jake Knotts (R-Lexington), who got even by alerting the media to Sanford's apparently not unusual AWOL status, claiming to be worried about him.
Anyone who thinks Sanford has done a good job for South Carolina is delusional. The state has the second highest unemployment in the country. He has totally disregarded the separation of powers to the point where many South Carolinians refer to him as a "divine right" governor.
For anyone who thinks that Sanford has done South Carolinians any favors, I would suggest that he/she check the comments on the "Charleston Post and Courier" website and also "The State" website.
I don't think too much of any politician, personal sentiment. You are right about S.C. having alot of unemployment, but have you ever driven down the back roads, ie. Hwy 321/189? If you will notice there are alot of 'juke' joints with males/females in their twenties/thirties hanging around throughout the day and night. It doesn't appear they are interested in finding jobs. They most likely have other sources of income, ie. prostitution, drugs and dogfighting (sounds like Lake George). I will say after listening to him, he is an embarrassment to S.C. and his family, I'm sure. MSNBC news is riping him a new one...
WHL, I came to Georgia from Charleston and I am disgusted by Mark Sanford's performance there, particularly in light of the known difficulties in attracting businesses to the state which stem directly from the state's traditionally poor system of public education.
Whenever a state is second in unemployment to a place like MICHIGAN, as is South Carolina, there can only be one answer: Gross neglect and mismanagement.
Sanford needs to go. I am not the only one who thinks so. There are plenty of people leaving comments on the Charleston "Post and Courier" and "The State" who share my opinion.
Murrelet, if him leaving would give S.C. a better edge, then maybe so. My view, why then protest him leaving office if it stems from him having an affair. Shouldn't the uproar have been prior for doing a bad job? There are more corrupt politicians doing worse then an affair, continuing to hold office. Doesn't that seem to say, it is o'kay to hold office and be corrupt (good job or bad) as long as you do not embarrass publicly?
Most often, I do not understand from the politicians or citizens when the importance of upholding an oath has a role. Is it only when the impact of corruption is felt, shouldn't it be for the corruption itself? Or in this case for the lack of doing a good job, not to be brought about by embarrassment of an affair? Sooner or later the ripples will be felt by the citizens, so why then do people let the CRAP continue til it makes them look like Sh-t?
WHL,
Prior to his trip to Argentina, there was plenty of criticism in SC of Sanford with regard to his job performance. The criticism that he fancies himself a kind of "divine right" governor is longstanding and particularly relevant in light of his involvement with "The Family" of C-Street infamy.
You will notice that none of my criticism has to do with his affair but, rather, runs along the lines of the longstanding criticism of many South Carolinians. That said, I would point out that Sanford is one of those who has run on a "family values" platform and he was also highly critical of President Clinton's philandering. The hypocrisy of Sanford's conduct is impossible to ignore.
I would again point out that had it not been for Mark Sanford's crossing Republican Jake Knotts by supporting someone else for his district, none of this would have come to light and Sanford would have been carrying on what appears to be a habitual, life-long pattern of behavior--probably until he became too old to do so.
I will agree the affair helped to shine the light on other wrongs of Sanford. But you made the comment of Sanford crossing Knotts by shifting support to be the reason Knotts came forward, what does that tell you about Knotts and perhaps as long as these affair(s) have been taking place the other politicians position on infidelity? Doesn't that put the others in a bad light as well? I'm not saying you are wrong about Sanford, I am saying 'I think' all politicians belong in the same category and most citizens... It's all about self!
