The other day, it was reported that in response to the "government shutdown," the Obama administration "decided" to close national monuments and parks - some of which are simply open-air displays which require no significant support staff or security. In fact - apparently the security that had to be ADDED to close the facilities was greater than that which was paid to keep them running. When I read the article, I thought "there they go again" - the Obama administration bumbling their way along trying to create negative headlines for the "Republican government shutdown."

But now they've gone too far. It was reported in the Washington Examiner that due to the "government shutdown," AFN - the U.S. armed forces radio and television network which serves our troops overseas - is off the air. The probable most significant effect of this is that sports programming (MLB baseball playoffs; NFL and NCAA football games) is not available to DOD personnel stationed in foreign lands.

I can speak from first-hand experience that if this happened while I was on active duty, it would make me EXTREMELY mad. And I wouldn't blame the Republicans for it either. I would blame the DEMOCRAT administration in power at the time who allowed it to occur. The President of the United States is our Commander-in-Chief. He is supposed to take care of the troops. One of the most significant ways to do this is to facilitate their rest and recreation with things like sports broadcasts piped in from the States on AFN. Put bluntly - this would piss me off. And I would blame OBAMA.

What would aggravate me further is this part of the Washington Examiner article:

"President Obama has visited the Navy-run presidential retreat Camp David in central Maryland only 32 times, but it is being kept open during the government shutdown for his entertainment and security at the same time the Pentagon is cutting sports coverage to hundreds of thousands of troops around the world."

See: http://washingtonexaminer.com/military-keeps-camp-david-open-halts-nfl-baseball-coverage-to-troops-overseas/article/2536819

Over the years, Democratic presidents and their administrations have been ham-handed in dealing with all things military. That is their hallmark. Once again, they have lived down to their tradition with this stupid act. I would hope that somebody in the Obama administration acquires some sense QUICKLY and puts AFN back on the air.

Here's another example of the Obama administration making it as difficult as possible for the greatest amount of tourists to our national parks and monuments. I especially like this part:

"“President Obama is not a bad poker player, but the man with all the chips always starts with the advantage (and he gets all the aces). He has closed Washington down as tight as he dares, emphasizing the trivial and the petty in making life as inconvenient as he can for the greatest number. It’s all in a noble cause, of course. Access to most of the memorials is limited, and often in curious ways. The Lincoln Memorial is easy to reach, with the streets around it remaining open. But the Martin Luther King Memorial is made difficult to reach, relegating it, you might say, to the back of the bus. Not very nice.

The Park Service appears to be closing streets on mere whim and caprice. The rangers even closed the parking lot at Mount Vernon, where the plantation home of George Washington is a favorite tourist destination. That was after they barred the new World War II Memorial on the Mall to veterans of World War II. But the government does not own Mount Vernon; it is privately owned by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. The ladies bought it years ago to preserve it as a national memorial. The feds closed access to the parking lots this week, even though the lots are jointly owned with the Mount Vernon ladies. The rangers are from the government, and they’re only here to help.

“It’s a cheap way to deal with the situation,” an angry Park Service ranger in Washington says of the harassment. “We’ve been told to make life as difficult for people as we can. It’s disgusting.”
