I think anyone receiving public assistance of any sort should at the very least be willing to perform public service of whatever need their talents fit.
I also believe anyone receiving public assistance should be required to prove that they are drug free weekly.
I'd also like to see members of our state and national legislature prove that they are drug free.
Then you'd see a real change in the wasteful "WAR ON DRUGS".
Many dollars would be saved.
If not outright legalization of drugs, many drugs should be decriminalized. I also think, that if one is continually assessed (3) times or more to be drunk on alcohol AND|OR drug impaired should face a violation tier of number of offences and bear the consequences of their actions and its affects upon government assistance.
Drunks, and Druggies are Not entitled to freebies.
How would this law effect the children of drug users on benefits? For some users it may be a deterrent to stay clean, for others nothing will make them stay clean. How do you sort that out? Do you not give food stamps to a family with 6 kids because mom failed a drug test? Anyone with any valid solutions? I think it is a great idea in theory...how do you make it work? The volunteer service is a good way to help habitual dependents make their way into the workforce and attain skills needed for employment. What do you do if they do not cooperate? Let their kids go hungry? Remove them from custody?
Tremendous insight, Eyes. In essence: should the child suffer the burden inflicted upon them by their addicted parents or parent?
You have to consider if the parent is a drug addict the children are already in an unsafe environment. THis is about hard choices and reality. If the parent cannot get to a point where they can pass a drug screening then maybe they do not need to be parents until they can get clean.
