What White People Fear

Robert Jensen, a UT journalism professor and the author of an intriguing new book, "The Heart of Whiteness," writes on Alternet about what he sees as white people's fears:

#It may seem self-indulgent to talk about the fears of white people in a white-supremacist society. After all, what do white people really have to be afraid of in a world structured on white privilege? It may be self-indulgent, but it's critical to understand because these fears are part of what keeps many white people from confronting ourselves and the system.

#The first, and perhaps most crucial, fear is that of facing the fact that some of what we white people have is unearned. It's a truism that we don't really make it on our own; we all have plenty of help to achieve whatever we achieve. [...]

#A second fear is crasser: White people's fear of losing what we have -- literally the fear of losing things we own if at some point the economic, political, and social systems in which we live become more just and equitable. [...]

#A third fear involves a slightly different scenario -- a world in which non-white people might someday gain the kind of power over whites that whites have long monopolized. One hears this constantly in the conversation about immigration, the lingering fear that somehow "they" (meaning not just Mexican-Americans and Latinos more generally, but any non-white immigrants) are going to keep moving to this country and at some point become the majority demographically. [...]

#A final fear has probably always haunted white people but has become more powerful since the society has formally rejected overt racism: The fear of being seen, and seen-through, by non-white people. Virtually every white person I know, including white people fighting for racial justice and including myself, carries some level of racism in our minds and hearts and bodies ...

I wrote a blog awhile back highlighting an article in which Jensen makes some interesting suggestions about the celebration of Thanksgiving. See:

http://www.dailytexanonline.com/news/...

and

http://www.alternet.org/culture/no-th...

One in particular goes like this:

"One indication of moral progress in the United States would be the replacement of Thanksgiving Day and its self-indulgent family feasting with a National Day of Atonement accompanied by a self-reflective collective fasting."

IMHO - the comments you cite only further demonstrate that Jensen - as a white American - continues to be part of the ilk that focuses on self-loathing and a destructive "blame America first" attitude. In short, he's too "heavy" and too "out there" for my tastes. I try to keep an open mind, but where Jensen is concerned, I've decided to take a pass.

My prior blog on Jensen is here:

http://community.coastalcourier.com/b...

Unfortunately, it is much less "colorful" now than then because the comments of a certain blogger were expunged from the site when their account was deleted. But from the flow of the discussion, I suspect you can get the gist of what was said in the deleted comments.

What this black man fears!

Is a proclaimed Radical Christian like Robert Jensen who paints white people in this ridiculous bubble that he is actually confined in?

I have 31 years of multicultural experiences of living, working, socializing and depending on white people and in my life, and this isn’t how the majority of them think.

Were they thinking that way when Obama had a 70% approval rating because his approval can never get that high by blacks only? Additionally, I wonder how low it would be if it wasn’t for the 95% of blacks that vote for party and color?

I vote for right “Rule of Law” over wrong “Politics” such as “it’s the right thing to do”

I fear palmetto bugs.

JimmyMack commented on Saturday, Aug 24, 2013 at 18:04 PM

Well fellas, I fear a black woman who has been wronged by her white man friend coming towards me with a pot full of hot grits thinking I am him.

I am so busy right now, but I hope I can make the time to comment on this...with the detail that it deserves.

EyesonHinesville commented on Sunday, Aug 25, 2013 at 10:16 AM

PN- Do you fear Robert Jensen's examples?

timeontarget commented on Sunday, Aug 25, 2013 at 10:26 AM

This is a subject which needs open thoughtful and honest discussion.

I think one fundamental issue between differing races when dealing with those different from our own perhaps we are all a little too quick to find ourselves to have been shown disrespect from someone different from us.

Maybe we don't all have the same thoughts and values but if we listen and ask and answer questions in polite discussion we can find common ground and form relationships which are genuine.

JimmyMack commented on Sunday, Aug 25, 2013 at 11:54 AM

My, my. Imagine that! Mr. Padrick, (TOT)
painting himself as a reasoned peacemaker of sorts! I suppose in your twisted mind Mr. Padrick your calling me a murderer of babies is an example of "if we listen and ask and answer questions in POLITE discussion we can find common ground..." is your impotent attempt to demonstrate polite discussion??!!! You, sir, are removed from reality Mr.P.

You are a pathetic, bitter old man displaying to my mind at least, the onset of Dementia. Calling me a murderer Mr. Padrick is NOT "polite discussion..." and lame attempts like your post above to effect some semblance of civility on your part is sickenly obvious and patently absurd.

timeontarget commented on Sunday, Aug 25, 2013 at 15:12 PM

JM I never called you a murderer.

THAT DECLERATION IS A CONCLUSION OF THE FIGMENT OF YOUR IMAGINATION.

JimmyMack commented on Sunday, Aug 25, 2013 at 16:34 PM

Mr. Padrick, You sir, blamed the Newtown School massacre of those babies happening "because Liberals let the Devil in the backdoor." Those are your words. Do you believe that statement is to be taken as an exoneration of guilt?? Are you crazy AND stupid??! You placed Liberals at the very center of the CAUSE of that mass murder!!

By you making such a damning statement as that, you made all Liberals, (that includes me), as being accessories to murder. You don't have to have a Law Degree to understand that connection Mr. Padrick. In any court of law, even in the court of COMMON SENSE, a person or persons who physically opens a door for a murderer to walk thru to kill people is JUST AS GUILTY AS THE MURDERER!

Now, I realize that I am arguing with a stop sign here. Try substituting Conservatives where you say Liberals letting the killer in the backdoor. Does that help you any in seeing the implication of your words? You are implying, sir, guilt by association and being accessory to a crime.

And until I have reason to see different, you are at the top of my list for making such a demeaning and hate filled statement. And just assuredly as I told you I could and would find out who you are and now have so done, I now state that I will devote the same amount of conviction in pointing out the inaccuracies of your words of which I take issue whenever they appear on these pages.

timeontarget commented on Sunday, Aug 25, 2013 at 16:40 PM

Ho-Hum

JimmyMack commented on Sunday, Aug 25, 2013 at 17:01 PM

Missed your afternoon Nap, I see. Your shallow comment is indicative of the depth of your comprehensive qualities.

Two lame, say nothing words from a demented soul.

timeontarget commented on Monday, Aug 26, 2013 at 05:55 AM

The liberals advocated doing away with the daily bible readings in school and thus allowed a void to replace the daily devotional.

TOT asserts that the devil came into our schools as a result.

The devil was certainly involved in the Newtown incident.

The conservatives certainly did not do that.

timeontarget commented on Monday, Aug 26, 2013 at 06:01 AM

Jimmy Mack aka Jimmy Darsey declared that TOT had called him a murderer.

It never happened.

Jimmy Mack aka Jimmy Darsey repeated that declaration many times

Jimmy Darsey you first posted the declaration that TOT had called you a murderer which was not true.

You sir have now repeated the deceptive declaration so much that you seem to believe it.

That is a common tactic employed by liberals.

If the shoe fits then wear it.

JimmyMack commented on Monday, Aug 26, 2013 at 10:06 AM

Mr. Padrick, I for one am astonished at your lack of connecting the dots. Can you not READ sir? Look up above at my post on Aug 25 16:34. It clearly lays out your culpability in blaming the death of those Newtown victims on My and other Liberals doorstep.

I am continually astounded at your lack of comprehension of the written word to which I attribute the fact of your high-school drop out status. You never learned to develop or understand different perspectives. This makes you a Neanderthal pc idiot, Mr. P. when it comes to the written word.

I should pity you and your arrested development, but I don't for you BELIEVE what you write. All that makes you a dangerous idiot.

I will allow you no quarter on these pages sir. You, Mr. Padrick have set your own course to reap the whirlwind.

JimmyMack commented on Monday, Aug 26, 2013 at 10:46 AM

One more thing Mr. Padrick, I, Jimmy Darsey, aka JimmyMack, am not ashamed to let people including my critics know who I am via my completed and open profile. You sir, desire to remain anonymous and not show yourself. That is a very telling act of cowardice on your part. You like to "hit" but you don't like getting "hit" back.

Such is the way of name-calling cowards.

HMJC commented on Monday, Aug 26, 2013 at 11:09 AM

Wherin lies the problem is the title of the bolg; "What White People Fear". In this day and age it should read more so what we all fear collectivly. And I don't mean this in a lovey dovey we all need to come together sort of format. What I mean that as long as we continue to deliberatly make distictions between color, creed, and race that is what we need to fear the most. We need to spend more time looking for a common thread and bond as oppossed to differences. Until that happens I refer to Winston Churchill, "All we have to fear is fear itself"

JimmyMack commented on Monday, Aug 26, 2013 at 12:42 PM

Hi HMJC. I could not agree more. I believe in practical incremental steps and I have a suggestion to make in this regard.

Sunday is the most Racially divided day in the Nation each and every week. I propose we do as Dr. King did and begin our quest towards improving race relations beginning in the Churches each Sunday. I propose that the local Ministerial Alliance meet and come up with a plan where members from each Church in a rotating sets of numbers visit each others Church on Sundays. Some churches are larger than others and adjustments would have to be made. But, this could be a start. We would not have to forsake our own individual membership status in our respective churches, but we possibly could learn to find common ground thru worshiping together.

I would suggest that our Ministerial Alliance take on this project and come up with a system. It would provide familiarity between the races and help us recognize commonly held spiritual values.

It may or may not solve all racial disparities, but I think it is worth a start. Change won't come overnight, but if we are serious about this then it is time to take action.

How could it hurt?

PoliticsNation commented on Monday, Aug 26, 2013 at 13:05 PM

I agree with HMJC but we have to get past incidents like this first!

Wild Wing Cafe Kicks Out 25 African Americans After White Customer Felt 'Threatened': Report

According to CBS affiliate WCSC-TV, Michael Brown and 24 of his family and friends were at Wild Wing Cafe celebrating his cousin's final day in Charleston, S.C., last month when the group was suddenly told to leave.

The reason? The shift manager allegedly told Brown that a white customer felt "threatened" by his party. When one of Brown's companions started filming the exchange, the shift manager is said to have told the group to leave.

"[That] totally alarmed all of us because we're sitting there peaceably for two hours," Brown told the news outlet.

Brown said that his group had waited "patiently" for two hours to get a seat at the restaurant. He took to Facebook earlier this month to express his frustration with the North Charleston establishment:

WCSC-TV reports that a representative at the chain reached out to Brown to apologize and offer a free meal for the group.

"We had a conversation," Debra Stokes, Wild Wing Cafe's chief marketing officer, told WCSC-TV. "It was a really good conversation... they just didn't receive the experience that they have come to know and love."

Thousands of people have since shared Brown's Facebook post, and others have bombarded Wild Wing Cafe's Facebook page with calls for a boycott:

We also need to get past people going nuts when companies like Chic-fil-A express support for traditional marriage. But there will never be total harmony in The Melting Pot.

I missed that one Sebe. When did that happen?

While you were asleep at the wheel JM

JimmyMack commented on Monday, Aug 26, 2013 at 17:17 PM

'while you were asleep at the wheel JM'

My what a clever statement Mr. Padrick. I am sure you must have a million or more of such repartee! Here's a few for you:

Your mama's birth canal was so wide it had TWO (2) no fly zones.

YOur mama's so nasty she went swimming and made the Dead Sea.

Your mama was so nasty she made Speed Stick Slow down.

Your mama's so fat she went to church and sat next to everybody.

Got more than you can stand Mr. Padrick. However, I am about to watch the news and look for your ever so witty rejoinders tomorrow.

JimmyMack commented on Monday, Aug 26, 2013 at 17:19 PM

We will, of course, pick up where we left off talking about your MAMA.

sebekm commented on Monday, Aug 26, 2013 at 19:33 PM

They used to call it "playin' the dozens." See:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dozens

But back to Chic-fil-A. It was July of last year when the "firestorm" occurred:

By the Way, FDR made the quote "we have nothing to fear but fear but fear itself" I said it was Churchill. sorry about that.

JimmyMack commented on Tuesday, Aug 27, 2013 at 17:13 PM

Yo Mr. Padrick (aka Tot)

YOur mama so stupid she tried to put her M and M's in alphabetical order.

Your mama stinks so bad she passed gas and killed half the population of skunks in America.

Your Mama has to be reminded to get her rabies shot every year by the Vet.

You urinate on a tree in your backyard everyday because your mama fed you dog food for every meal. And you enjoyed it.

Your Mama streaked across the Floral Convention show stage and won first place for best dried arrangement.

Your mama was so skanky, when she was in San Diego, the Navy canceled all shore leave for sailors.

Liberals are working on a vaccine so the sailors can come ashore to spend their 10 dollars with your Mama.

Your turn bozo Tot (aka Mr.Padrick)

sebekm commented on Wednesday, Aug 28, 2013 at 00:37 AM

I find it interesting that a blog which began with Jensen has digressed to the dozens. IMHO - that is a fitting tribute to Jensen's views and attitudes.

BRAVO!!!

timeontarget commented on Wednesday, Aug 28, 2013 at 07:31 AM

I don't think the childish blather does anything but make this blog site less interesting.

JimmyMack commented on Wednesday, Aug 28, 2013 at 09:56 AM

Ok then Tot, aka Mr. Padrick. You can take your ball and go home if you like. I would only comment that your lack of humor makes this site less interesting and also reveals much about you that is already obvious to many: You take yourself TOO SERIOUSLY!

Besides, I got other legit games we can play.

BTW: Asleep at the Wheel is\was the name of a Band back in the day.

timeontarget commented on Thursday, Aug 29, 2013 at 12:28 PM

JM you are probably correct in your opinion that I take myself too seriously.

That is your perspective.

I've got my opinion on that as well as you.

I won't bore our readers with childish games of name calling such as you seem to take such delight in.

I don't think you can run me off of this site as you have done with Len Calderone and others.

However you are welcome to continue in that effort so that we might all see just what Mr. Watkins is willing to allow on this community blog site.

So have at it big boy.

JimmyMack commented on Thursday, Sep 05, 2013 at 15:16 PM

My disagreeing with folks on these page is not an attempt to "run people off."

I, quite frankly, enjoying seeing and reading any and all of their replies. I will admit that in my drawing some folks out here on these pages, ends up sometimes revealing more about the kind of person they are. You are a prime example of that. Much can be learned by folks reading Tot's impressions and reaction to which you commit to print.

It is a prime example of giving people enough rope with which to hang themselves. I do not have to call Tot or anybody else a fool. I allow them the privilege to do that on their own.

In the same vein, as one of my favorite
Presidents used to say: If you cannot take the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

We discuss much here on these pages and sometimes it evolves/devolves into something more. I for one enjoy a heated discussion. Nothing in the TOS states that one MUST reply to anybody's posts and blogs. You are free to ignore them. If my particular use of verbs, adjectives, phraseology, etc. etc....bother you, well that's just tough cookies.

I will tell you one little secret Tot about all of this: the more you do it the better you get at it.

So Tot, you keep on blogging and postings, cause I plan on doing the same thing.
