In response to a petition to ban breed specific dogs, most notably the Pitbull, the White House has stated it is against any federal level legislation banning breed-specific dogs. Instead, it supports the communities to work on tools, such as education, which will help lower the incidents of dog bites.

I am left feeling like I want to rip out my tongue, throw it on the floor and stomp on it rather than admit the Prez got this one right. A dog is as good as it's owner and that is were the responsibility should be placed, firmly on the shoulders of the owners. Good training, exercise and socialization would cut 85% of bites. Public education in regards to how to deal with known and unknown dogs would go far to make it almost 100%. Animals should not have to pay the price from lazy owners. I also think the penalty for dog fighting should be increased. It is not only a horror for the animals involved but it poses a threat to public health and safety. Breeders, i.e. anyone who breeds for profit even if it is just a litter or two, should be strictly regulated by the Dept. of Agriculture and be inspected regularly, to include making sure that the breeders are not inbreeding. This cause not only health problems for the dog but makes them high strung and more easily prone to bite.

I will have to agree that the FED should not be involved in this. I am not of Pitbulls, but I am less a fan of the governments hands into everything.

Animals really are like children though; it's how you raise them. Using the sterotype the Pit bulls are aggressive by nature is akin to saying the Irish drink and fight because of a pre-desposed disposition.

Al Sharpton Fires
