"Pentagon celebrates gay troops

The Pentagon on Tuesday toasted gays in the military, with a top adviser to President Obama declaring the country is “safer” now that homosexuals may serve openly.

“Because we repealed ‘don’t ask, don’t tell,’ our military … is stronger and our country is safer, more equal and more just,” said Valerie Jarrett, the keynote speaker at the Pentagon’s gay pride celebration.

It was the Defense Department second annual gay pride gathering since September 2011, when Mr. Obama signed the repeal of “don’t ask, don’t tell,” a ban on gays serving openly in the military implemented during the Clinton administration.

This year’s 35-minute event in the Pentagon auditorium was more low-key and shorter than last year’s pride event, which featured a gay Marine officer, an Air Force lawyer and a lesbian West Point graduate.

Wednesday’s speakers were assembled by a new group, DOD Pride, and featured three senior officials, topped by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel.

“We’re very proud of everything the gay and lesbian community have contributed and continue to contribute,” Mr. Hagel said. “With their service, we are moving closer to fulfilling the country’s founding vision that all of us are created equal.”

Eric Fanning, the Air Force undersecretary and currently acting Air Force secretary, noted that two years ago a gay could not serve openly. Now, a secretary of defense was speaking at a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender celebration.

Ms. Jarrett told of meeting gay service members at the White House, including a gay Marine Corps captain.

“When he deploys in August, he’ll be taking his husband with him,” she said.

Army Reserve Brig. Gen. Tammy Smith, the first openly gay general officer, stood in the audience with her partner, to a round of applause.

“Stand up. Come on,” Ms. Jarrett said. “Whoo. Whoo.”

She added, “Change is knowing that you are free to be who you are and love whomever you want without fear of harassment or losing your job, just like everyone else.”

Ms. Jarrett called the repeal of the gay ban “one of the most significant civil rights accomplishments of the president’s career.”"

Instead of saying "Wooo Wooo" all I can say is "Woe Woe."

As the moral slide downward continues so does the moral rot of a once proud and respected nation worldwide.

Such as this is probably why both Russia and China are treating the current administration with such little respect.

It is a victory for God, if in fact you believe God is Love, which I do, then as humans God has given us the opportunity to love anyone we choose.

The moral slide, is the slide of the old schoolers and the loud crys coming from them as they slide down that long dark chute towards political and moral irrelevancy.

Thank God.

I think God had little to do with it. As Mrs. Esther Anderson would say:

Get thee behind me, Satan....

JimmyMack commented on Wednesday, Jun 26, 2013 at 15:27 PM

Our agenda is still intact. No matter the clamor coming from the right. We are passing legislation, and striking down damaging laws.

I am sure Tea Partiers and their sympathizers (those in the closet and those out) surely do see Satan comin full bore right at them. Many on the right have long laid claim that God is on their side. Now facing the fact that maybe it just ain't so, is I am sure, a very frightening sight for them to behold.

I think we are finally beginning to hear the death knell as well as witnessing the desolation of biased Social-Cultural Conservatism.

It has been long overdue.

HMJC commented on Wednesday, Jun 26, 2013 at 16:49 PM

SO what is overdue?

- Lack of a moral compass
- THe Mandatory acceptance of a lifestyle

HMJC commented on Wednesday, Jun 26, 2013 at 16:53 PM

that is not consistent with individual values.
- To accept that a union between a man and a woman is just the same as a man and a man or a woman and a woman in the eyes of the lord. To accept that I am expected to teach my children that homosexuality is just as normal as any other relationship. Sounds like a BIG win for all...

JimmyMack commented on Wednesday, Jun 26, 2013 at 17:49 PM

Individual values HMJC are taught at home and Church. Goverment is not in charge of that job even if IRAN feels that it is their job( teaching values...)

America believes in Separation of Church and State. Course it could rain frogs as I have stated before. I ain't no Nostradomus. Human kind is evolving.
At one time liberal thinkers, artists, scientists were burnt at the stake.

The tables have now been socially culturally turned now to where its the conservative's dwindling false prohphetic righteously held values that are headed to the cold dark dungeons of a mis-guided society that could/would not adapt.

They, the non lovers, the haters, are headed to the Lake of Fire and damnation.

No more burnings of scientists, liberals, artists, sociological pragmatists, shunning of Episcopal Priests of female gender, no more you have to go to the back of the bus, no more you musta speakea da English, no more of you are forbidden to love just a certain gender.

When "anything goes," we all lose.

JimmyMack commented on Thursday, Jun 27, 2013 at 11:21 AM

We still have laws, Sebe. WE just do not have laws that say "anything goes."

When the laws propagate and promote "anything goes," we all lose.
