The Supreme Court has ruled a key point of the Voter's Rights Act to be unconstitutional. "Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act requires that certain jurisdictions with a history of racial discrimination, including most southern states, submit any changes to their election systems to the U.S. Justice Department for “pre-clearance.” The court stated that the success of the Voter's Right's Act was what doomed Section 5.

by requiring a jurisdiction to get special permission to change anything to do with voting and not requiring "ALL" jurisdictions to get the same special permission was discrimination. it's about time to undo a lot of the mess caused by race separations of the past. we as a country will not ever move past it till we put it in the past. we shouldn't forget the past so we don't go back to it. but the reality is everyone has the same chance now. it's time to level the playing field across the board and grow as a country.

gacpl: Agree. It is my understanding that now it is up to Congress to rewrite and PASS legislation - if they want the provision to basically be "reinstated" but apply to all states (instead of just the mainly Southern states who supposedly triggered the provision in the fist place).
