Marine Band Disgrace

The low point of our republic was reached when the 'Presidents Own' Marine Band took part in faking the National Anthem during the presidential inaguration. Our presidential inaguration. Never mind Beyonce. The market can settle that. The members of this band are the top musicians in the world at what they do. They barely have to qualify militarily. Any one of them could have performed the anthem solo on their instrument in a driving rain and done the country proud. Instead, the band of John Phillip Sousa decends into the gutter of cheap theatrics by allowing a taped recording to be used. Members of the band should receive a pay cut the equivalent of a drop in rank. The director staff should be marched to the parade ground in orange jumpsuits, stripped of all rank, medals, awards, ect. then serve thirty days in the brig in the bowels of a Navy ship. They can finish their military music careers playing bass drum in a Coast Guard reserve band in the Arctic

Milli Vanilli all over again.

I was wonderin tho Hudat1...do these band members have to go thru Marine Corps boot camp or just demonstrate proficiency at playing an instrument?

HuDhat1 commented on Sunday, Jan 27, 2013 at 10:30 AM

Members of this band are professional musicians . I don't beleive they attend basic or qualify on a weapon. If you fail the audition you might be encouraged to join a regular corp band that will require a trip to Parris Island.

My hunch is that the band had very little to do with the decision for Beyonce' to "lip-synch" the anthem. From the news reports I've seen, the decision to use taped music was made at the last minute because Beyonce' was unable to show up for the rehearsals. According to this article by cbsnews.com: "all inaugural music is (routinely) pre-recorded in case weather conditions or other circumstances could interrupt the program."

See: http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-207_162-5...

This particular blog must have been intended to provide "the low point" of facetiousnesss in the history of this here blog site. Good joke. But if there's any "blame" for the musical happenings (or lack thereof) at the public inauguration, it rests with BEYONCE'.

The band has everything to do with who lyp-synchs. That's why it's called 'The President's Own'. The Band Director say's ' Miss Beyonce we have dress rehearsal at 10 and the anthem at 12. If for any reason you don't make it, this young lady right here will sing it'. That band has someone who can sing it as well as Beyonce. Then you let Beyonce and her manager explain what happened. And who accepts that honor and then dosn't show up for rehearsal. You do not fake the National Anthem. That's worse than Taps on a cassette player at a military funeral.

sebekm commented on Wednesday, Jan 30, 2013 at 12:58 PM

You can't blame it on the band. Beyonce' was the featured performer. She was the headliner. If you have her there and she's not singing while the band plays, you have a bigger scandal and more questions to answer than what you have now. Imagine the headlines:

Marine Band Tells Beyonce' Not To Sing

(or some other such nonsense.)

You know the press. They would have made it a RACIAL issue.

No - the headliner has to show up on time and do the rehearsals - if they are absolutely necessary. I played in bands (to include organized/marching ones) for most of my adolescence and young adult life. When you have the circumstances as outlined thus far, the "best decision" is to go the way they went. At least it maintained the "illusion" (until the truth came out, that is.)

Not sure I agree, but it deserves thought.

I recommend reading the column of Leonard Pitts in today's issue of the Savannah Morning News.

It speaks volumns about where we have arrived as a society over the past several decades.

HuDhat1 commented on Wednesday, Jan 30, 2013 at 22:01 PM

the band should have said up front that the anthem will be live. Even if we pre record for posterity the performance will be live. If for any reason (extreme weather, illness, bad hair, lost a $20,000.00 earing)you can't sing, that's ok. The band will play or we will have a member of our choral detachment sing. You do not fake the national anthem.

sebekm commented on Thursday, Jan 31, 2013 at 12:17 PM

It may seem odd, but at the vast majority of the functions that they play, bands do not call the shots. They do what they're told. At the President's inauguration, I would imagine that their spot in the pecking order of decision makers - yes, even about the songs; who plays; when; etc., - is at the bottom of the list.

Beyonce' is an international *star* with substantial clout. She was the "main attraction" for the national anthem at the inauguration. So When it comes to who decides how to and what if in Star Spangled Banner department, this means that Beyonce' is a lot higher up the chain than the Marine Band. Consequently, this means whatever Beyonce' wants, Beyonce' gets. The band gets to shut up. I have no doubt that the reason they went with lip-synch and recorded music was because Beyonce' wanted it that way (for whatever reason). The band does not get to dispute this - no matter if they are the "President's Own" or the Crypt-Kicker Five.

Unfortunately, that's the facts, jack!

JimmyMack commented on Thursday, Jan 31, 2013 at 15:42 PM

Yep. But she did one hell of a job at just lip-synching. Beautiful woman!

HuDhat1 commented on Thursday, Jan 31, 2013 at 21:54 PM

Hey, it's not some awards show it's the inauguration of our president on the steps of our capitol You said you were a band member in high school. It's the biggest football game of the season. Maybe recognizing you at senior night. You stand at attention on the fifty yard line and pretend you're playing while a recording of the anthem is played over the PA. Would you feel like an idiot? Would your band be a disgrace to your school? Damn right you would. The next time we attend a military function and the anthem is played, how about we all sit in our seats and hold up a picture of ourselves standing. Our country has reached a low point. You don't fake the national anthem. And if you are planning to, take the Marine uniform off and hire the Cryt-Kicker Five

JimmyMack commented on Friday, Feb 01, 2013 at 04:37 AM

I wasn't in a school marching band. I was in a rock and roll band. Played keyboards and lent backup.

But you are right, I am an idiot.

I still think Beyonce is beautiful tho and that this whole matter is starting to make a mountain out of a mole hill, IMHO.

sebekm commented on Friday, Feb 01, 2013 at 12:13 PM

Beyonce settled the issue, stating - per my post above - that it was HER decision to lip-synch. See:

http://abclocal.go.com/wabc/story?sec...

The operative part reads:

"She admitted during her Super Bowl news conference that when she performed for President Barack Obama and the nation, SHE DECIDED (emphasis added) to sing to a prerecorded track because she didn't have time to practice. Calling herself a self-proclaimed "perfectionist," she said she wanted the day to go off without a hitch.

"I practice until my feet bleed and I did not have time to rehearse with the orchestra," she said, adding that she was also emotional that day.

"Due to no proper sound check, I did not feel comfortable taking a risk. It was about the president and the inauguration, and I wanted to make him and my country proud, SO I DECIDED (emphasis added) to sing along with my pre-recorded track, which is very common in the music industry. And I'm very proud of my performance."

The band does what it's told. This time they were told to sit down, shut up, and listen to the music. In this matter, they are BLAMELESS.

timeontarget commented on Friday, Feb 01, 2013 at 15:58 PM

You know what sebe???

In this case you are right.

HuDhat1 commented on Saturday, Feb 02, 2013 at 00:18 AM

No need to go emphasis added, all caps, super supporting documents, Dude. Mr. OnTarget has spoken for your side but i beg you suffer my closing argument. Let's review. My point, right or wrong is that the top Marine Band, which is the most select assemblage of bandsmen in the world, should not be put in the position of doing a public performance, in dress military uniform of pretending to play our national anthem. My personal position would hold for any piece at any performance. It's clear that the band was prepared to accomodate the guest (this one or any other). There was even a photo released of the recording session. I would much prefer that this band never succomb to that We don't hire this band to record. We make sure they are this good so they can play it live, under any circumstance, even battle conditions. Others would know more about chain of command than me. Does it now include Beyonce telling the Marine Band to 'sit down, shut up, and listen to the music'. Probably not. And if it were the top white house liason officer in charge of all things military at the inauguration on behalf of the 'Commander In Chief' then yes, the band is blameless. No less humiliated but blameless. If that's not the low point of our republic, it's plenty close enough for me.

HuDhat1 commented on Saturday, Feb 02, 2013 at 00:42 AM

A word about Beyonce. The self proclaimed perfectionist could not make rehearsal for the biggest job(honor) of her career. When was this booked, two days out? She was emotional; yes of course, you're a singer, how could you not be. No proper sound check; that's a load. Whadda we got, high school kids running the sound board. Besides, she had an ear monitor, one pre set level. I decided to sing along, which is very common (see Milli Vinili referance by JimmyMack above)in the music business. I guess common will have to do then. And I am very proud of my performance. Which one, the original tape or trying to covince the audience it was live. Hillary was right. "What differance does it make anyway'.

sebekm commented on Saturday, Feb 02, 2013 at 13:44 PM

"...should not be put in the position of doing a public performance, in dress military uniform of pretending to play our national anthem."

Agreed. But MY point is - let's not blame THEM for it, which is what your basic blog post appeared to do. The blame - if any - should fall on Beyonce'. She was calling the shots and in a squabble between her and the Marine Band, especially in such a public venue, the band LOSES.

That was my only point. The band is blameless. They do what they're told. They may be "The President's Own," but in this case they were there to provide "background" for Beyonce'. They knew who was going to get their butts kicked if Beyonce' got pissed off.

It's an unfortunate fact of life. If we were talking about a band concert which the Marine Band was giving separate and apart from some other function, it would be a different story. But they were there in total accompaniment status - which means they shut up and do what they are told. Beyonce' called the shots. It is unfair to blame the Marine Band for anything in connection with this SNAFU.

Hinesville is a busy ,crowded, important, metro area. Got a bus system even. Two positions from the organizers are problematic. One: ...
